Buckhill

August 11th, 2008

Hit the Buckhill mtb race up Sunday. There were some really fast dudes lined up (Moore, Hall, Oftendahls, Fischer, ….) so my goal was a top 10. Spent the first lap eating dust from the riders infront of me. Spent most of the second lap trying to recover from a really, really f-ing hard crash. Bit the dust on a downhill sweeping corner. Thankfully Barry and Allison Tungseth were sitting in the woods spectating so some one got to see me sliding on my face. I was going to fast trying to catch up to H-wood who was just infront of me. Got up and had a pretty smooth race from there on out. Gave up one more spot to a Penn cycle dude who was rocking it real smooth. Crossed the line in 11th place. One more shot at a top 10 at the border battle. I’m sure that field will have an even stouter line-up. Mtb racing is a blast and I’m glad I gave it a go. The people are cool as they come and the courses are fun. It’s almost as fun as cross.
Peace out.

Minnesota Cyclocross Racing Team Cup (MCRTC)
Sponsored by TIME SPORT USA and Presented by SmithersMpls.com

Announcing season-long team series competition to decide the best Minnesota cyclocross team

After much CRYing, Grumpy’s/LGR and Crossniacs, sat down and put together the end all be all competition to decide the best of the best. After hours and hours of contract negotiations, TIME SPORT USA and SmithersMpls.com stepped up as the title sponsors. “It was a tough decision…we were evaluating sponsoring a pro team or the MCRTC and we decided the MCRTC would give us a lot more exposure for our brands.” stated Smithers. “We are honored to be working with Grumpy’s/LGR and Crossniacs, both world-class teams.”

The guidelines for the series are:
The top 3 racers per team per race are counted for the series. Teams must email the series administrator, hayes.tim@gmail.com, prior to September 7 to let us know to keep track of their team. Teams must also donate a nominal $10 fee to partake. The $10 fee will be donated to a local food shelf.

If you do not notify Super Rookie, then you will not be included in the competition will miss out on bragging rights for a whole year. The MCRTC will be presented at the Minnesota State Championship race.

The winning team will receive the MCRTC and the honor of keeping it at their shop sponsor until next season’s team is chosen – think Stanley Cup of Cyclocross.
Limited edition MCRTC apparel will be available for sale at the cross races.

It’s pure pleasure to build a bike with top-end stuff, C-Dale SystemSix, SRAM Red, Cosmic Carbone Pro Tubies. Jared asked how I can train on tubulars… 3 words… Continental Gatorskin Tubulars - the best of both worlds!

Get those orders in…

MTB season in Oregon is over…booooooooo!

August 2nd, 2008

(1) Guy, aka UPSman, is out of the hospital and glued to the computer so feel free to send the sandbagger an e-mail or two. He’s selling his old ‘cross rig which is a really sweet ride. It’s a Kona Major Jake that he picked up from some pro racer.

(2) Jesse, aka Qrankarm, did a couple of short track races in the Portland Racing series. Pretty respectable finishes for someone who doesn’t race mtb at all. Nice job big guy!

(3) I’m focusing on running to get ready for all the ‘cross and kermesse (sp?) races that Oregon has to offer. I’m not built for running…think 175lbs on a 5′4″ frame. It’s hell on my knees. Anyway, I just completed my fastest 10K race tonight. It was held entirely on a track so it was 25 laps of pure torture. Finished in a respectable 47:58.

Peace from the West Coast Posse: Pac NW All-Stars.

MTB Race Report for Memorial Classic

July 24th, 2008

mike1.jpg

Mike C and I rolled out to the start line for the Sport Class. We were both in the same group (me for being over 40 and Mike for being on a single speed).

redwing-roots.jpg

From the whistle Mike shot past me through the rough and down the side of the entire pack – that snapped me out of my “I will just take this race easy state of mind”. I jumped on his wheel and followed him until he ran out of gear!

Somehow I found my self near the front of the race and slowly worked my way forward.

I managed to keep the rubber side down through all the nasty bits and hit the hills as hard as I could.

Here are the results:

As a post race note – turns out I had separated my costal rib from my sternum on Saturday, aka costochondral separation (wrenching on a bottom bracket). The race on Sunday must have aggravated it as I was suffering after the race. It hurt to even breathe. Looks like I am off the bike for a few weeks until my rib stays put. Until then I have to not breathe hard and wear a chest compression strap.
