Crossniacs Team Kits?????

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Some people have been asking if we are going to have kits this year. My plan was to create kits for next year, but a few of you are asking for them this year. We can get skin-suits, jerseys, bibs made, but the minimum quantity is 6.

  • Jerseys will probably be around $75
  • Bib around $75
  • Skinsuits around $120

What do you guys think? Does anyone know of a cheaper place to get them? We were looking at

One Gear, One focus

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

With the focus on ‘cross, my training has been simplified by training without a derailleur.  I have set my 29er mtn bike up with some 34c Conti Speed Kings and a 32×14 gearing.  I am debating on whether switch to drop bars on this bike but for now I run a flat bar.  For those days of training on the pavement, you can usually find me on my fixed geared pushing a 40×16.

Riding with only one cog forces me to stay on top of my gear which means attacking hills, spinning the flats, and powering out of transitions.  The A-bike is slowly being put back together and will be ready for the first race in Breck.

Moto all the way, baby

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

My first season racing cross, I didn’t run moto-style and I learned real quick-like why I needed to near the end of the season. On a training ride, I was running a bit hot into the barriers, dismounted, right hand on top tube ready to carry, and left hand feathering the (front) brake to bleed a little speed. Next thing I knew, the rear wheel was kicking up and and around to nail me in the back of the legs. Ouch. (And this wasn’t any light-weight bike, but a Surly Cross Check.)

I pulled new cables that very weekend before the race. Now, I can still bleed speed when dismounting with right hand getting ready to carry and don’t have to worry about it. It takes me about 2 rides each fall to remember the bike is set up this way, and then I’m all good. I’m even thinking of running the road bike this way….

Moto or Non-Moto???

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Do you run your brakes Moto style on your cross bike (left brake pulls the rear brake and right brake pulls the front brake)? Or do you run them non-moto (left brake pulls the front brake and right brake pulls the rear brake?)

Since I got my 1st cross bike in 1997, prior to 97′ I was racing a mtn bike, I’ve been running Moto. Why on earth would you do that? When I’m dismounting my left had is on the bars and or left brake and my right hand is on the top. I find it easier to be pulling my rear brake instead of my front brake. If my left was my front brake then it is my opinion that the back wheel would kick in the air.

What are you guys running and why?

Quick Start Intervals

Monday, August 27th, 2007

One of the most important parts of a cross race is the 1st minute. You want to get to that 1st set of barriers or run-up in the top 10 or you will be stuck behind a bunch of people as the leaders will never be seen again.

From a complete stop. Sprint out of the saddle for 15 seconds, then sit for 30 seconds going all out. Rest for 75 seconds. Do 5-10 of these. I find that over 10 is diminishing returns for me. My HR goes from 111 to 185 during these intervals. I do them on my road bike on the road, because if I do them on the road with my cross bike I run out of gears with a 42×12. Ultimately it would be the best to do these on a cross course and with your foot out of the pedals, just like you are starting a race.
